Dizziness is a horrible symptom and those of you who have experienced it or now suffer from dizziness know you need help and fast. Dizziness caused by motion can be the most frustrating and debilitating. Motion dizziness ranges from mildly annoying to completely incapacitating which often causes us to avoid activities such as riding in a vehicle, flying on a plane or taking a cruise. Sometimes we feel “it’s always been this way” and sometimes it develops later in life. Regardless, it is very treatable!
The cause of motion sensitivity is a mismatch of cues received by the brain. There are 3 systems sensing information: touch, vision, and inner ear. For instance, as a passenger in a vehicle you have stable touch cues because your car seat is not moving relative to your body, however your vision is receiving conflicting cues. The inside of the car is not moving relative to you but the outside view is flying past your eyes. Your inner ear is also dealing with conflicting cues as the car speeds up and slows down. If your brain is unable to figure out these conflicting cues, you will feel dizzy! Many people who suffer from dizziness end up with multiple doctor appointments, and the cost can sky rocket. Healthcare costs are a burden for many people. Don’t let “dizziness” put a hole in your pocket. Start with your Family Practice Physician or an Ear Nose & Throat Specialist who will refer you to a qualified Balance & Vestibular Physical Therapy Clinic who employs a Herdman Certified Vestibular Physical Therapist and has the high tech equipment to help your Doctor make a proper diagnosis. Look at choosing a Balance & Dizziness Clinic with a Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP), a Videonystagmography (VNG), and a Video Head Impulse test (vHit) to name a few.

“Riley was diagnosed with torticollis at 1 month old. He is a twin and the tight quarters only favored looking one direction so much he developed a knot in his neck muscle that was very visible as well as a flat spot on the side of his head. With PT it has made a huge difference in his behavior and interaction! By starting right away when we were diagnosed and working a lot with him at home it only took about 5 months and his back to normal with his head control and development. Krysta gave us stretches and exercises that were easy to do throughout the day with a busy house of 3 kids."
