Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo

• 

  BPPV is the most common type of vertigo.  Although not a serious health concern, BPPV can be very troublesome and disruptive to a person’s life. FYZICAL is one of the few facilities in the region to possess the most sophisticated equipment and knowledge to accurately diagnose the type of BPPV you may suffer from.  BPPV causes brief episodes of mild to intense dizziness, vertigo and often nausea.  BPPV is usually triggered by certain changes in head position such as turning over in bed or going from laying down to sitting up.

Dizziness

• 

  Dizziness encompasses lightheadedness, imbalance, vertigo, and motion sensitivity.  At FYZICAL we are able to systematically look at each of the contributors, identify the cause and treat the issue using state-of the art equipment.  
  One of our many diagnostic tools is the Bertec system. This sophisticated piece of equipment allows us to objectively assess the three contributors often leading to dizziness; the inner ear, touch and vision.

  • Dizziness related to the ear: can be caused by viruses that attack the inner ear nerve, fluid in the ear, displacement of the crystals that are a part of the inner ear, and even migraines that impair the ear’s nerve.
  • Dizziness related to touch:   Joint replacement and various types of nerve damage impair our ability to feel the ground beneath us. As well, impairments and or damage to the neck region resulting in muscle knots or other orthopedic disorders may result in dizziness and unsteadiness.  
  • Dizziness related to the eyes:  Many times dizziness is caused by poor eyesight and/or dim lighting as well as distracted vision such as when walking while looking for your keys in your purse. 

Motion Sensitivity

• 

  Dizziness caused by motion can be the most frustrating and debilitating. Motion dizziness ranges from mildly annoying to completely incapacitating which often causes us to avoid activities such as riding in a vehicle, flying on a plane or taking a cruise. Sometimes we feel “it’s always been this way” and sometimes it develops later in life. Regardless, it is very treatable!

  The cause of motion sensitivity is a mismatch of cues received by the brain. There are 3 systems sensing information: touch, vision, and inner ear. For instance, as a passenger in a vehicle you have stable touch cues because your car seat is not moving relative to your body, however your vision is receiving conflicting cues.  The inside of the car is not moving relative to you but the outside view is flying past your eyes. Your inner ear is also dealing with conflicting cues as the car speeds up and slows down.  If your brain is unable to figure out these conflicting cues, you will feel dizzy!

  At FYZICAL, we have the equipment and expertise to thoroughly test each system to identify which is being confused and treat that system.

Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT)

  Video Head Impulse Test (vHIT) utilizes a sophisticated video goggle which provides a very accurate measurement of the Vestibular-Ocular Reflex (VOR).  The vHIT allows the Audiologist to assess whether the dizziness is related to a vestibular disorder.  It also provides additional information about portions of the inner ear that are not assessed with the VNG. 

Computerized Dynamic Posturography (CDP)

  State-of-the-Art, sophisticated equipment to objectively test and measure each of the three systems we use for balance; vision, inner ear and contact with the ground.  It is considered the “Gold-Standard” in providing the most accurate and objective data in order to provide your therapist and physician the correct information for a true diagnosis of the cause of your balance problems.

Overhead Safety Harness System

  Featuring a state of the art, overhead harness system that offers the utmost in fall prevention during rehabilitation.  Patients will be able to perform even the most challenging balance exercises with extreme confidence and safety. Bioness Interactive Therapy System (BITS TM)

  The BITS incorporates testing and training challenges to address reaction time, memory, visual/spatial awareness, and precision of movement after injury. It tracks progress and objectively reports results so that challenges can be fine-tuned to each patient's individual areas of need. It includes a 4-stage reaction time test that was standardized as an indicator of the cognitive and motor demands necessary for driving.

Audiology/Hearing Test

  Did you know your balance organs are located in your ear? An essential part of the FYZICAL balance program includes audiological testing which examines the hearing and balance organs in the inner ear, as well as the nerves that control eye movements. FYICAL has advanced testing that can help your physician determine why your symptoms are occurring. Our tests are essential to confirm, or even rule out, the inner ear and central pathways as a cause for your symptoms. It is important to understand our tests can confirm there is true dysfunction, even if you have had other medical testing (such as an MRI or CT scan) which showed normal function! FYZICAL is unique because an audiologist is working closely with our specialized physical therapists to decipher the results and develop an individualized program.
